Principal Flores

My name is Rick Flores and it is my honor and privilege to serve as the new Somerset High School Principal for the 2017-2018 school year. As I reflect on my educational journey...I am truly grateful for the opportunities that I have been afforded to enjoy and I can humbly state that I have been blessed beyond measure. As a young man, I was raised in the inner city of San Antonio where poverty and crime oftentimes dictates the future of so many of our inner-city children. From middle school and beyond, I was raised in a single-parent home where we were oftentimes plagued with many life challenges. Our family struggled so much that as soon as I turned sixteen years of age I accepted my first job as custodian at a local Handy Andy Grocery Store. Although the challenges were too many to count, I am indebted to some of my middle and high school teachers, counselors and my Project-Stay representative that crossed my path while a student at Luther Burbank High School in San Antonio. It was not until my senior year of high school that I gave serious consideration to attending a university. Like many of our children I had a desire to attend a university but had no idea how to begin this process.

In the fall of 1990, I began my university studies at Texas Luther University in Seguin, Texas. Attending and graduating from Texas Lutheran was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Without a doubt I was oftentimes pressed and challenged at every side but I was determined to not give up. Sometimes in life if you want something that you have never had...you must be willing to do what has never been done. Let me reassure our Bulldog students that hard work does pay off! Being one of the first in my family to attend the university posed its fair share of challenges but earning my education has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Your education is that one thing that no one can take away from once it is earned.

As principal of Somerset High School, my expectation of all Bulldogs is that we never settle for anything less than our absolute best. You can expect that our students will be challenged to reach higher than perhaps they would have anticipated. Our goal is to simply provide our students with a menu of options and choices beyond high school. I do not expect perfection but rather improvement from all students. I learned from an early age that our greatest competition in life lies in the individual that we observe in the mirror every morning. So the question then becomes, "Can I be a little bit better today than I was yesterday?" Perfection is not expected but improved is required of all students.

I look forward to an amazing year of learning and growing with you Bulldog Nation. As a graduate of Luther Burbank High School, I was a BULLDOG! As a graduate of Texas Lutheran University...I was a BULLDOG! Now...I have the distinct honor and privilege of serving as the proud principal of our Somerset High School BULLDOGS! Let's remain "PAWSITIVE" and have a memorable 2017-2018 school year!

Once a BULLDOG...always a BULLDOG!
